Cognitive:

  • Uses hands and mouth to explore objects

  • Turns eyes and head to sound of hidden voice

  • Localizes sound with eyes

  • Finds a partially hidden object

  • Looks around at things nearby

  • Brings things to mouth

  • Shows curiosity about things and tries to get things that are out of reach

  • Begins to pass things from one hand to the other

Communication:

  • Fixes gaze on face

  • Reacts to sudden noises or sounds

  • Listens and responds when spoken to

  • Begins to use consonant sounds in babbling, e.g. “da, da, da”

  • Makes different kinds of sounds to express feelings

  • Notices toys that make sounds

  • Uses babbling to get attention

Physical:

  • Rolls over in both directions (front to back, back to front)

  • Begins to sit without support

  • When standing, supports weight on legs and might bounce

  • Rocks back and forth, sometimes crawling backward before moving forward

  • Uses hands to support self while sitting

  • Rolls from back to tummy and tummy to back

  • While standing with support, accepts entire weight with legs

  • Reaches for nearby toys while on tummy

  • While lying on back, reaches both hands to play with feet

  • While lying on back, transfers a toy from one hand to the other

Social Emotional:

  • Knows familiar faces and begins to know if someone is a stranger

  • Likes to play with others, especially parents

  • Responds to other people’s emotions and often seems happy

  • Likes to look at self in a mirror

Daily Living:

  • Reacts to sight of bottle or breast

  • ​Comforts self with thumb or pacifier
